Behind the Scenes: What 20 Years of Audio Production Has Taught Me About Client Success

A candid look at the lessons learned from two decades in professional audio

When I started RHDR Media, I thought success would come from having the best equipment and the most technical knowledge. After 20 years in audio production, I’ve learned that the real secret to client success lies in understanding something much simpler: people don’t buy audio services—they buy solutions to their problems.

The Client Who Changed Everything

Last month, I worked with a small business owner who was convinced her podcast sounded “unprofessional” because she didn’t have a $3,000 microphone. After listening to her recordings, the real issue wasn’t her equipment—it was that she was trying to sound like someone else instead of embracing her natural speaking style.

We spent our session not on technical adjustments, but on helping her find her authentic voice. The result? Her audience engagement doubled within three episodes, and she landed two new clients directly from her podcast.

What I Wish I’d Known Starting Out

Equipment is just a tool. The most expensive microphone in the world can’t fix poor technique or unclear messaging. I’ve created award-winning audio with basic setups and seen expensive studios produce mediocre results.

Every voice is unique. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach to audio production. What works for a corporate training video won’t work for a casual podcast. Understanding your audience and your message is more important than any technical specification.

The best audio is invisible. When your audience stops thinking about the sound quality and starts focusing entirely on your message, that’s when you know you’ve succeeded.

The Memphis Advantage

Working from Memphis has taught me something valuable about authenticity. This city doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not—it’s real, it’s soulful, and it has its own unique sound. That’s exactly what your audio should be: authentically you, professionally delivered.

Whether you’re recording in a converted attic studio like mine or a million-dollar facility, the principles remain the same: serve your audience, stay true to your message, and never compromise on quality.

What’s Next for RHDR Media?

As we continue growing, my focus remains on what’s always mattered most: helping clients find their voice and share their message with clarity and confidence. Every project teaches me something new, and every client success story reminds me why I fell in love with audio production in the first place.
